ANNOTATION:

As in case of any system combining both organizational and technological aspects, the development of a Unified State System for Radioactive Waste Management (USS RW) involves staged deployment of its infrastructural and functional components in accordance with the timeframes and procedures specified by the Government of the Russian Federation. The setup of all required tools, including regulatory, infrastructural and technological ones is also a part of this process. The paper discusses the start of preliminary activities aimed at development of a comprehensive data array being part of a feasibility study aimed at regulatory optimization of radioactive waste management system in Russia. The paper presents the existing challenges producing negative impacts and impeding the efficiency improvement in RW management, as well as relevant options enabling to address them.

Keywords: radioactive waste management, radioactive waste disposal, legal regulation, classification of non-retrievable radioactive waste, radioactive waste acceptance criteria for disposal.
