MONITORING OF RW STORAGE FACILITY BUILT AS A RESULT OF EI-2 URANIUM-GRAPHITE REACTOR DECOMMISSIONING

ANNOTATION:

In 2015 under the Federal Target Program “Ensuring nuclear and radiation safety for 2008 and for the period up to 2015” there was a decommissioning of EI-2 PUGR by “in situ entombment” method completed at site No.2 of “PDC UGR”, JSC. The result of those efforts is EI-2 Radioactive Waste Storage Facility (EI-2 RW SF). EI-2 is a production uranium-graphite nuclear reactor, which was located at a site of “PDC UGR”, JSC. EI-2 was commissioned in 1958, shut down on December 28, 1990. Total operation time is 33 years. There is a system of engineering safety barriers created during construction of the storage facility. Experiments and predictive estimates demonstrated reliable isolation of radionuclides inside the EI-2 storage facility by the system of natural (enclosing rocks) and engineering barriers. And the radioactive impact on the public and the environment is predicted to be much lower than the norm.

EI-2 PUGR decommissioning by the “in situ entombment” method is a pilot project, so it is necessary to verify the safety of the chosen decommissioning method by assessing the EI-2 storage facility impact on the public and the environment. For that purpose “PDC UGR”, JSC, is monitoring a range of key EI-2 RW SF parameters and is improving its monitoring system.
