PROSPECTS OF WORKS ON ACCUMULATED RW IN THE ORGANIZATIONS OF THE FUEL COMPANY JSC «TVEL»

Solutions on categorization of radioactive waste (RW) as special, made during a primary registration, were based on comparison of assessments of collective effective doses, risks and expenses for two options of the waste management. The status of disposal facilities for special RW allowed starting works on transfer of some objects into the special RW mothballing facilities. The works are performed in a strict conformity with the requirements of the federal norms and regulations, and sanitary rules. A comparison of disposal options is not required for categorization of RW as retrievable. Using the example of the Fuel Company "TVEL", the present article demonstrates that rating of RW as special allows performing the works on isolation of RW from the environment. In the same time, the works on extraction of the retrievable RW are frequently performed against the radiation protection principle – principle of justification. A comprehensive justification allowing choosing the most safe and financially effective way of final waste isolation can lead to revision of the solutions to rate the waste as retrievable RW.
