RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES OF FSUE RADON

This article overviews FSUE RADON’s activities addressing pressing challenges associated with the management of low- and intermediate-level waste (RW) in various aggregate states, as well as spent radiation sources (SRS).

For RW conditioning purposes, FSUE RADON utilizes methods and facilities providing segregation, pressing, heat treatment and metal decontamination, employs advanced measuring and analytical control equipment and operates a fleet of specialized vehicles.

The company operates modern RW storage facilities and is gaining experience in the remediation, maintenance and decommissioning of ‘legacy’ storage facilities not fully meeting all modern requirements.

All RW management processes are rigorously documented, the radiation impact on the population and the environ ment is assessed, and operational disruptions are either prevented or their consequences are mitigated.

The FSUE RADON’s responsibilities also include radiation monitoring and inspection of facilities and the cleanup of contaminated areas.
