MONITORING OF CESIUM -137 AND STRONTIUM-90 RADIONUCLIDE RELEASES INTO WATER AND SNOW COVER AT RADIOACTIVE WASTE STORAGE AND DISPOSAL SITES

ANNOTATION:

The paper presents the methods applied to measure 137Cs and 90Sr in natural waters via radionuclide concentration by Termoksid-35, NKF-GDT and Termoksid-3K sorbents and the results obtained as applied to the monitored radionu clide releases into the waters of observation wells and snow cover at radioactive waste storage and disposal sites. It evaluates the influence of water macrocomponents on cesium and strontium yields: cesium yields from water samples and melt water (snow) in the T-35 sorbent concentrate accounted for 0.94 ± 0.04 and 0.97 ± 0.01 respectively. Cesium yield in the NKF-GDT sorbent concentrate amounted to 0.99 ± 0.01. Strontium yields depend on calcium concentration and range from 0.95 to 0.40 providing minimum measurable 90Sr activity of 0.02 Bq/L in the sample given an 8-hour long concentrate measurement on UMF-2000.
