Ilyev, V.I. Titkov, E.S. Linetsky, E.A. Vanina ANNOTATION: The main radioactive waste management concept adopted by ROSATOM is to ensure the environmental safety of the population and the environment. The processes taking place on the territory of radioactive waste storage facility (RWSF) RPC — SPB FSUE RADON (hereinafter – RWSF) were studied and it was shown that operation of near-surface RW storage facilities along with the influence of climatic, temporal and man-made factors results in gradual degradation of safety barriers decreasing their efficiency and increasing the safety deficit of storage facilities. Therefore, decommissioning of such storage facilities was started. However, some of them will be operated until their compete decommissioning, which necessitates certain efforts to ensure their environmental safety. The article overviews the existing methods and technologies reducing the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on near-surface storage facilities operated in the territory of RWSF and provides certain recommendations regarding the selection of priority areas contributing to their environmental safety. Keywords: radioactive waste, radioactive waste storage facility, environmental safety, safety barriers, safety deficiency, border zone, monitoring, cutoff wall, sheet pile fencing.
