ADDRESSING NUCLEAR LEGACY AND RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES AS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGIES

JOURNAL: 2026, ¹ 2 (35), p. 6-16

AUTHORS: L.A. Bolshov, V.V. Tinin

ANNOTATION:

This article authored by the co-chairs of Program Committee’s Presidium of the 12th International Conference on
Radiation Protection and Radiation Safety in Nuclear Technologies held in Moscow from 29 to 30 October, 2025, presents
the views on the key objectives and focus areas associated with SNF reprocessing, development of RW disposal
systems and current challenges faced in dealing with facilities holding non-retrievable RW, the decommissioning of
radiation-hazardous facilities, the development of calculation systems for safety analysis and safety assessment, as
well as radiation safety of population. It pays particular attention to work planning and relevant challenges related
to further development of radioactive waste management infrastructure, improvement of RW management systems
and decommissioning.

Keywords: radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuel, decommissioning, nuclear legacy, radioactive waste management system.
