DEVELOPMENT OF A MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR IODINE-CONTAINING SORBENTS AT FSUE PA MAYAK

Spent sorbents applied in the off-gas treatment systems during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel from power
reactors, namely, during the head-end stages of fuel reprocessing at the RT-1 plant, contain long-lived 129I and are
referred to RW Class 2. Their conditioning methods are currently being developed. This article presents the methods selected to process spent sorbents from an off-gas treatment system capturing iodine and elaborates on their laboratory testing. The feasibility of safe iodine-containing radioactive waste disposal in a deep repository has been assessed with
relevant engineering designs developed to provide its safety: construction materials for the engineered safety barrier
system and methods providing radioactive waste emplacement in the underground excavations of the disposal
system were proposed. A few options proposed to manage iodine-containing radioactive waste were compared between themselves based on the associated costs and their long-term disposal safety. This assessment confirmed the fundamental feasibility of disposing of such radioactive waste safely in a deep disposal facility with recommendations provided on the iodinecontaining radioactive waste management options.
